The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on March 13 that contractors will temporarily close several traffic lanes as part of the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The closures, which are weather permitting, will affect multiple locations and are scheduled to take place between March 16 and March 28, with some work extending into early April.
The lane closures are necessary to allow reconstruction and widening of interstate ramps at the interchange, as well as the addition of collector-distributor lanes and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange. These changes aim to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
Specific closures include single and double right-lane and shoulder closures on both northbound and southbound sections of I-285 between Cascade Road, Bolton Road, US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and SR 280/South Cobb Drive. Pacing operations affecting all lanes will also occur during daytime hours on certain segments. On I-20 westbound, there will be similar lane restrictions from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway, as well as pacing operations from SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive to the I-285 interchange.
Other affected areas include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, and Harwell Road between Collier Drive and Amhurst Drive where flagging operations are planned.
Advance notice has been given for overnight ramp closures with detours for motorists traveling from I-20 westbound to I-285 northbound (March 20–23) and from I-20 eastbound to I-285 northbound (March 26–28; March 30–April 3). Detour routes have been provided for each closure period.
Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution in work zones, reduce speed, stay alert for workers, and check real-time updates via Georgia DOT’s information channels including calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.
