The Georgia Department of Transportation announced a series of temporary interstate lane closures for the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project in Fulton and Cobb Counties, beginning May 30. The closures are scheduled to facilitate reconstruction and widening of several system-to-system ramps at the interchange, as well as the addition of collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.

Weather permitting, alternating single and double lane and shoulder closures will occur nightly on sections of I-285 Northbound from Cascade Road to Bolton Road between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with some operations extending until 11 p.m. Pacing operations affecting all lanes are planned overnight from May 30 to June 1. Similar alternating closures will take place on I-285 Southbound between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive starting June 1 through June 6 during nighttime hours.

On I-20 Westbound, pacing operations are scheduled from SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive to the I-285 Interchange daily from June 1 to June 4 between 10:30 a.m. and noon. Additional alternating lane closures will occur nightly from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway starting May 30 through June 6. Eastbound on I-20, alternating single and double lane closures are planned nightly from Riverside Parkway to the I-285 Interchange beginning June 1 through June 6.

Other locations affected include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, both experiencing nightly alternating single lane closures from June 1 through June 6.

Several overnight ramp detours are also scheduled: the I-20 eastbound to I-285 northbound ramp will be closed with a detour route in place from June 1 through June 6; the I-285 northbound to I-20 westbound ramp closure is set for June 8 through June 13; and the I‑285 southbound to I‑20 eastbound ramp closure is planned for June 17 through June 22. Only one ramp within the interchange will be closed at any given time, with schedules coordinated for traffic maintenance.

Motorists are advised that exact times may change due to weather conditions, with possible intermittent traffic pacing or additional closures within work zones beyond those listed in this notice. Drivers should expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, stay alert for workers, and check real-time information before traveling by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development across Georgia while employing about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; it focuses on developing roadways as well as supporting rail and transit programs; operates under the State Transportation Board; serves statewide transportation needs; and works with local governments and federal agencies on transportation efforts, according to the official website.
