The Georgia Department of Transportation announced temporary interstate lane closures for the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project beginning May 4 and continuing through May 9, weather permitting. The closures are part of a larger effort to reconstruct and widen several ramps at the interchange, as well as add collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
According to the announcement, alternating single and double lane and shoulder closures will occur nightly on both northbound and southbound I-285 between Cascade Road and Bolton Road, as well as between US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive. Similar closures are scheduled for I-20 westbound from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway, and eastbound from SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard to the I-285 Interchange. Additional pacing operations affecting all lanes will take place during daytime hours on select dates.
Other locations impacted include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, with single right-lane and right-shoulder closures each night during the advisory period.
The department also advised that a separate weekend-long closure will affect all lanes of I-285 northbound and southbound between Martin Luther King Jr Drive and Cascade Road from Friday evening, May 8 until early Monday morning, May 11. Motorists are encouraged to expect delays, exercise caution in work zones, reduce speed, stay alert for workers, check real-time traffic information before traveling by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.
