Beginning July 18, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will implement long-term traffic shifts at the I-16/I-75 interchange in Macon/Bibb County. Traffic will be directed onto two newly constructed I-16 eastbound travel lanes, with this configuration expected to remain for approximately six months.

The new traffic patterns are scheduled to be installed between 9 p.m. on July 25 and 10 a.m. on July 26, subject to weather and site conditions. During this period, traffic in the area will temporarily be reduced to one lane for safety.

For drivers on I-75 southbound from just south of Pierce Avenue heading to I-16 eastbound, traffic will shift left onto the new lanes. This shift will restrict access to the I-16 eastbound exit ramp at Spring Street/Exit 1A, with detours directing traffic past Spring Street to exit at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

I-75 northbound drivers from just north of Hardeman Avenue towards I-16 eastbound will also shift left onto the new lanes but retain full access to Spring Street/Exit 1A as usual.

These changes facilitate construction of pedestrian bridges over the Ocmulgee River, part of the broader I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project. The use of new lanes marks progress towards completing phase four of this project by late 2026.

Motorists should anticipate delays and are urged to exercise caution and reduce speed in work zones. For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions, contact GDOT via their helpline or online resources.
