Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) contractors are set to implement a significant traffic shift on I-95 northbound this week, as part of the ongoing 16@95 Improvement Projects. The project involves opening a new collector-distributor lane at the I-16/I-95 Interchange. These lanes run parallel to main travel lanes and link them to access roads or entrance ramps, aiming to improve traffic flow.
The shift is scheduled for Wednesday, May 14, starting at 10 p.m., and will continue until Thursday, May 15, at 5 a.m. During this period, construction partners will close ramps to facilitate the transition of I-95 northbound traffic into its final configuration. Motorists should anticipate delays due to intermittent lane closures along this section of the highway.
With the new connecting lane system in place, drivers on I-95 north must make exit decisions earlier than before. The barrier-separated lane from interstate through traffic reduces weaving maneuvers and provides more distance for safe entry and exit at the interchange.
“This is a major milestone as the16@95 Improvement Projects moves toward substantial completion with all lanes and bridges in final alignment this year,” stated Georgia DOT officials. The Major Mobility Investment Program project openings aim to enhance traffic flow and safety along I-16 and I-95—one of Georgia’s busiest freight corridors—as well as serve as a gateway to Savannah’s growing port.
