Crews with the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will begin work on a new right-hand turn lane at the intersection of State Route 41 and Atlanta Street in Lamar County starting October 6, 2025. The project is part of GDOT’s Quick Response initiative.
In addition to the new turn lane, workers will install an R-cut intersection at the same location. An R-cut, also known as a J-turn intersection, is designed to reduce vehicle crashes by changing how traffic from minor roads can cross or turn left onto major roads. At these intersections, vehicles from minor roads must first turn right and then use a downstream U-turn to complete left or through movements. All turning movements remain available for vehicles traveling on the major road.
According to GDOT, “It will improve traffic flow and safety.”
The construction is expected to take up to 60 days to complete. However, officials caution that dates may change due to weather or other unforeseen factors. Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce speed when traveling through the area during construction. Real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions are available by calling 511, visiting 511ga.org, or using the Georgia 511 app.
GDOT oversees planning, construction, and maintenance of state and federal highways in Georgia. The department also supports local governments with road maintenance and manages programs related to bridges, waterways, public transit, railways, aviation, biking, and pedestrian access.
