The Georgia Department of Transportation announced on May 13 that the new I-20 westbound connecting lane and flyover ramp to I-285 southbound are expected to open in the second quarter of 2026, marking a significant milestone for the I-285/I-20 East Interchange Project.
This development is important for motorists who regularly use this interchange, as it will change traffic patterns and is intended to improve safety and reduce congestion. The new westbound connecting lane will separate entering and exiting traffic from general purpose lanes, while providing access to both Wesley Chapel Interchange and I-285 northbound and southbound. Motorists heading northbound will exit via the left lane, while those going southbound will use the right lane. Those continuing onto I-285 southbound will travel on a new flyover ramp over the interchange before merging onto their route.
A smaller improvement is also underway at I-285 northbound over Snapfinger Road. The mainline bridge is being widened to accommodate increased capacity from the ramp off I-20 as well as more vehicles approaching Glenwood Road exit. This expanded bridge is scheduled to open in the third quarter of this year.
Motorists are encouraged to stay informed about these changes by following Georgia DOT’s social media channels or contacting them directly for updates about final opening dates or other opportunities related to traveling through this interchange. According to the official website, the Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions across Georgia, employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion, supports roadways along with rail and transit programs, operates under the State Transportation Board, serves all regions through its network, and collaborates with local governments and federal agencies.
