The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is continuing essential road work throughout Southeast Georgia from May 24 to May 30. The construction and maintenance projects will result in various traffic interruptions across the region.
In observance of Memorial Day, GDOT has announced restrictions on interstate lane closures. These restrictions will be in effect from noon on Friday, May 23, until 5 a.m. on Tuesday, May 27. During this period, no lane closures that restrict or interfere with traffic will be permitted.
Motorists are advised to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones and to remain attentive for workers. All scheduled work is subject to change due to weather conditions or other factors.
Traffic interruptions are categorized by interstates and counties:
– **Interstate 95**: Includes overnight lane closures at the St. Marys River Bridge in Camden County, ongoing maintenance between SR 99 & SR 251 in McIntosh County, and several other projects extending into June.
– **Interstate 16**: Lane closures for bridge jacking and structural repairs near Chatham Parkway Bridge and installation of power cabinets in Laurens County.
– **Interstate 516**: Continuous nightly lane closures for bridge maintenance from Louisville Rd to Tremont Rd in Chatham County.
Additionally, there are multiple bridge constructions and rehabilitations occurring across various counties including Glynn, Long, Pierce/Ware Counties, Wayne County, and others. Resurfacing operations are also taking place on several state routes such as SR 38/US 84 in Liberty County and SR 56 in Montgomery County.
Other notable traffic interruptions include utility work on US 80/SR 26/Ogeechee Rd in Chatham County requiring daily lane closures.
Motorists should expect delays during these periods and exercise caution when driving through affected areas. For real-time traffic information statewide or assistance requests via CHAMP roadside services within Southeast Georgia, drivers can call the free service at “511” or visit www.511ga.org.
The GDOT continues its mission of planning, constructing, and maintaining Georgia’s highways while supporting local governments with road upkeep efforts. Their commitment remains focused on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility within the transportation system.
