The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a temporary closure of State Route 88 in Richmond County to allow for pipe replacement work. The affected section is between US Route 1/State Route 4 and Bath-Edie Road, located about half a mile west of the Blythe Area Recreation Center.
Maintenance crews are scheduled to begin work on Monday, December 1. Initially, SR 88 will be reduced to one lane. Full closure is planned for Tuesday, December 2 as crews remove and replace the pipe beneath the roadway. The project is expected to take up to one week, depending on weather conditions.
A detour route has been established for drivers coming from Hephzibah: travel west on SR 88 to Bath-Edie Road, then north on Bath-Edie Road to US Route 1, and finally west on US Route 1 back to SR 88.
The department urges motorists to exercise caution in the work zone. “Slow down and watch for workers. Don’t drive distracted. Drive alert, arrive alive,” officials stated.
Work schedules may change if weather conditions affect progress.
