The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of temporary interstate lane closures as part of the ongoing I-285/I-20 West Interchange project in Fulton and Cobb counties. The closures, scheduled to begin Monday, August 25 and continue through Friday, August 29, are dependent on weather conditions.
According to the Georgia DOT, contractors will close lanes at various locations to allow for reconstruction and widening of several interstate ramps at the interchange. The project also includes the addition of collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.
Lane closures will affect both directions of I-285 and I-20. On I-285 Northbound from Cascade Road to Bolton Road, single right-lane and right-shoulder closures will occur nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with double right-lane closures from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Southbound on I-285 between SR 280/South Cobb Drive and the I-20 Interchange, pacing operations are planned daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Additional single lane closures are set for US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway to SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive during nighttime hours.
I-20 Westbound will see single right-lane and shoulder closures nightly between Anderson Avenue underpass and Riverside Parkway from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., while Eastbound traffic will experience pacing operations between SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard and the I-285 Interchange each day from 10:30 a.m. to noon, along with alternating lane closures overnight between Riverside Parkway and the interchange.
Other impacted areas include SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive, both with single right-lane closures scheduled nightly.
Holiday work restrictions will be in place starting Friday, August 29 at noon until Tuesday, September 2 at 10 p.m., during which no roadwork or traffic-interfering activities will take place.
“Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers,” stated Georgia DOT officials in their advisory.
