The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has announced ongoing road construction and maintenance activities across Southeast Georgia from Saturday, August 30 through Friday, September 5. The agency noted that these projects are essential for the upkeep and improvement of the region’s transportation infrastructure.

During the Labor Day holiday period, GDOT will implement lane closure restrictions on interstates and major state routes. From 12 p.m., Friday, August 29 to 5 a.m., Tuesday, September 2, there will be no lane closures that restrict or interfere with traffic. All scheduled work is subject to change depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen factors.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously in work zones, reduce speed, and remain alert for workers present along roadways.

A detailed list of current traffic interruptions was provided by GDOT. On Interstate 95, multiple counties including Chatham, Effingham, Camden, Bryan, Glynn, and Liberty will experience various overnight lane closures for bridge repairs, resurfacing operations, sign improvements, and maintenance activities. For example:

– In Chatham/Effingham Counties (I-95 North Milepost 111-112.5), lane closures will occur at night between September 2–9 for widening work.
– At the Florida State Line in Camden County (St. Marys River Bridge), overnight lane closures are scheduled as part of bridge repairs.
– Several locations along I-95 Southbound and Northbound will see nightly single-lane or outside-lane closures due to concrete work for sign improvements and asphalt resurfacing.

On Interstate 16 in Chatham County, daily single-lane closures under Chatham Parkway Bridge are planned alongside corrective item works through August. An exit ramp closure at Exit 164A is set for guardrail repair on Thursday night into Friday morning.

Interstate 516 in Chatham County is undergoing continuous nightly lane closures for bridge maintenance from Louisville Road to Tremont Road until August 31.

Other notable projects include:

– Bridge replacements requiring full road closures with detours such as Lewis Frasier Rd at Peacock Creek in Liberty County (150-day closure).
– Railroad crossing improvements causing short-term road closures like SR 86 in Toombs County.
– Multiple bridge rehabilitation projects throughout Candler, Glynn, Bulloch, Chatham counties with expected completion dates ranging into late 2025 or early next year.
– Resurfacing operations on several state routes including SR 38/US84 in Wayne County (nightly lane closures through September), SR196 in Liberty County (milling/resurfacing nightly through December), SR117 in Telfair County (daily lane closures until end of year), among others.
– Utility work and paving operations affecting US80/SR26/Ogeechee Rd from Victory Drive to Tremont Road in Chatham County.
– Construction of new roundabouts such as at SR25 Spur at SR99 in Glynn County with ongoing daily lane restrictions.

New signalized intersections will be activated this week—one example being Flemington Village Blvd. on US84 within the City of Flemington scheduled for Wednesday activation.

GDOT encourages motorists to expect delays during these periods and utilize resources such as calling “511,” visiting 511ga.org, or downloading the Georgia 511 app for real-time updates about traffic conditions and project statuses.

According to GDOT’s statement: “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation.”
