The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a $5.8 million contract to replace the Old Quitman Road bridge in Lowndes County, which was built in 1928 and closed due to deterioration. The bridge spans CSX Railroad tracks about six miles west of Valdosta. Construction is expected to be completed by early spring 2027, though no official start date has been set.
Tim Golden, State Transportation Board Member for the 8th Congressional District, commented on the project: “I am happy to see this long-awaited project being awarded today. This will be a much improved and safer bridge once completed.” He added that the award would be welcome news for many residents in Lowndes County.
Russell R. McMurry, GDOT Commissioner, expressed appreciation for local cooperation: “GDOT appreciates the partnership with Lowndes County for us to advance this important local bridge replacement for the county.”
GDOT inspects all bridges every two years and recommended replacing the nearly century-old structure due to several issues, including deteriorating concrete that exposed rebar in some areas. The original bridge was not designed to support heavier vehicles such as fire trucks and school buses, which led to its closure when it became unsafe.
The new bridge will measure approximately 140 feet—slightly longer than its predecessor—and feature wider 11-foot lanes with three-foot shoulders. During construction, traffic will continue detouring via Old Quitman Road, Ousley Road, and US 84. Griffin Grading & Concrete LLC of Cordele was selected as the lowest qualified bidder for the project.
The Georgia Department of Transportation states its commitment to providing a safe and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia’s economy while considering both citizens and environmental concerns.
