Construction has begun on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT). This project aims to address one of the nation’s worst freight bottlenecks, as identified by the American Transportation Research Institute. The initiative involves reconstructing and widening ramps at the interchange and adding lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north.
Donald Stull, Georgia DOT project manager, said, “We’re excited to officially begin heavy construction on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project.” He acknowledged that while construction might be inconvenient temporarily, it will ultimately improve safety and travel efficiency.
The design for this project includes several enhancements. These include a complete reconstruction of infrastructure like bridges and pavement for durability. Exit ramps will be reconfigured from left to right lanes to reduce vehicle weaving and improve safety. Additional lanes will also be added to accommodate current and future traffic volumes.
Georgia DOT is committed to clear communication with the public during construction. Motorists are advised to exercise caution in work zones. For more information or updates on the project, visit their website or contact them via email or hotline.
Georgia DOT manages state and federal highways in Georgia, focusing on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility.
