Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will proceed with construction activities on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb. The scheduled work, contingent on weather and site conditions, is set to take place from Friday, June 20, through Friday, June 27.
Lane closures and traffic shifts are planned for Thursday, June 26, and Friday, June 27, from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. Law enforcement vehicles will manage traffic speeds while flaggers guide drivers on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between the I-16 eastbound and westbound ramps as bridge construction activities occur.
Long-term closures include Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp to I-16 westbound; these have been closed for several months. The Spring Street on-ramp to I-16 westbound has been relocated to the far left lane.
Construction activities for June 20-27 involve various phases:
Phases 4 and 5 focus on areas from I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek. This includes ongoing construction of bridge substructures and superstructures for I-16 Spring Street entrance and exit ramps, a new Second Street bridge substructure, one new I-16 westbound bridge substructure along with two superstructures, two new I-16 eastbound bridge substructures, pouring bridge deck spans and edge beams on a new I-16 eastbound bridge superstructure, two new I-16 westbound entrance ramps, demolition of a bridge ramp to I-16 eastbound, constructing new MSE retaining walls along both directions of I-75 and other project walls. Pipe installation and drainage structures are also being worked on throughout the area.
Phases 2 and 3 cover work from Hardeman Avenue to I-16 eastbound including continued installation of Riverside Bridge lighting as well as Walnut Street lighting and guardrail over I-75. Construction of concrete sound and visual walls along both sides of I-75 is ongoing.
Phase 1 focuses on evaluating remaining work items from the split at I-16/I-75 to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.
The $500 million megaproject aims to enhance safety and mobility by widening and reconstructing sections of interstates in Macon-Bibb through seven design phases continuing until 2030.
