Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) crews have been actively treating the state’s interstates and routes as a winter storm moves through north central Georgia. The focus has been on applying brine, salt, and aggregate to reduce ice buildup on roads, bridges, and overpasses. So far, approximately 1.3 million gallons of brine, 1.6 million pounds of salt, and 3.5 million pounds of aggregate have been used in the northern region.

As the storm’s impact intensifies across north and northeast Georgia, Georgia DOT is reallocating resources to these areas. This includes personnel, snowplows, and additional brine trucks to regions experiencing worsening conditions. Crews are working in 12-hour shifts to manage road conditions where possible.

A travel advisory remains in effect as ice accumulation increases due to falling temperatures. Motorists are advised against traveling today as icy conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight, increasing the risk of refreezing on wet pavements.

Many schools, state offices, and businesses in north and central Georgia will remain closed tomorrow to minimize travel during this hazardous period. A State of Emergency is active across Georgia until Thursday to facilitate resource mobilization and emergency response.

Traffic volumes have decreased by up to 80% on some interstates due to public compliance with warnings. All Georgia Express Lanes will stay closed until further notice.

Motorists should check road conditions via 511GA before traveling or report incidents through their services. Assistance from HERO or CHAMP units is available by contacting 511GA.
