The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has provided an update on the I-285/I-20 East Interchange project, highlighting progress made throughout 2025 and outlining what is expected in the coming year. The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety at one of Atlanta’s key highway interchanges.

According to Georgia DOT, several major milestones were achieved this year. Three replacement bridges opened, multiple traffic shifts were implemented, and significant work was completed on both the new flyover bridge and mainline interstate widenings. In the spring, crews opened a new I-285 southbound to I-20 eastbound flyover bridge, replacing an older hairpin turn. Georgia DOT described this as “a major milestone of the transformation into a new, safer interchange.”

On I-20, construction of a wider bridge over Snapfinger Creek was finished and efforts continue to align roadway traffic for final configurations. Additional work includes building new auxiliary lanes and westbound connecting lanes from Wesley Chapel Road to the interchange. The newly opened Wesley Chapel on-ramp to I-20 westbound now links with these connecting lanes to carry vehicles toward I-285.

Earlier in 2025, traffic was shifted onto a new Fairington Road bridge over I-20, which realigned Fairington Road with DeKalb Medical Parkway at a signalized intersection. A new Miller Road bridge also opened ahead of schedule, ending detours for local residents. Final work at these locations continues, including improvements at the Fairington Road and Hillandale Drive intersection that are expected through next year.

Georgia DOT anticipates reaching substantial completion of the interchange project by late 2026. Next year will see the opening of another key flyover: the new I-20 westbound to I-285 southbound bridge. This structure will connect with lanes running underneath Wesley Chapel Road as part of ongoing improvements.

After major construction wraps up in early 2026, crews will focus on noise walls and finishing touches throughout the area. Minor tasks such as cleanup will follow substantial completion; drivers are advised to remain cautious when traveling through active work zones until all activities are finalized.

In its update, Georgia DOT extended thanks for public patience during construction: “The I-285/I-20 East Interchange project team would like to extend its gratitude for your continued patience and safe driving practices this year.” The agency added a holiday message: “As we approach the holiday season, remember to keep following all posted signage and drive alert, in and out of the work zone.”
