The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is organizing a Public Information Open House (PIOH) and a 30-day comment period for the proposed Interstate 16 Widening project. This initiative spans from I-95 to State Route 67, covering Bryan, Bulloch, Chatham, and Effingham counties. The PIOH aims to offer the public an opportunity to examine preliminary design concepts and provide feedback.
The I-16 Widening project seeks to enhance safety, improve mobility, and support regional growth along the corridor. The plan includes widening approximately 32.5 miles of I-16 from two to three lanes in each direction. It also involves realigning existing lanes toward the median, reconstructing wider shoulders next to relocated travel lanes, and addressing substandard pavement conditions.
Additionally, the project will involve widening or replacing 20 bridges at ten locations. Notably, right-of-way acquisition is not anticipated for this project.
Two in-person events are scheduled for public review of conceptual designs and other project information. Attendees can engage with subject-matter experts present at these sessions:
– June 11, 2025: Bulloch County Center for Agriculture, Statesboro
– June 12, 2025: Bloomingdale City Hall
Both events will take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., without formal presentations.
For those unable to attend in person, all PIOH materials are accessible on the project’s website at https://i16-widening-0020168-gdot.hub.arcgis.com/. Public comments are invited until June 26, 2025.
Comments can be submitted through various channels:
– Written comments or verbal submissions via court reporter at PIOH events.
– Online survey on the project’s website.
– Email comments sent to P3division@dot.ga.gov.
– Voicemail left on the project hotline at (404) 631-1733.
