At the 2025 ITS World Congress in Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) introduced the Day One Deployment District (DODD), an initiative that offers a live demonstration of connected vehicle technologies to attendees from over 50 countries and regions. The event, held from August 24 to 28, focuses on operational, next-generation systems designed to improve safety and efficiency in transportation.
“We must invest in technology to ensure we’re preparing for the future we all want and need, one foundationally based on safety and efficiency in all forms of mobility,” said Russell R. McMurry, P.E., Georgia DOT Commissioner. “I’m very excited we will have Day One opportunities for everyone coming to the ITS World Congress, and to see demonstrations of the technology’s practicality and provide them with real world experiences.”
The DODD features real-world deployments of cellular vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication infrastructure. These corridors or communities use V2X technology at scale, allowing vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists to interact with traffic systems for improved safety and mobility. Unlike pilot programs or conceptual projects, these are production systems intended as models for broader adoption across the country.
“The V2X DODD proves that innovation is here, now,” said Laura Chace, President and CEO of ITS America. “This experience exemplifies the theme of the ITS World Congress, ‘Deploying Today, Empowering Tomorrow,’ showcasing cutting-edge technologies that can save lives and improve mobility across America. ITS America is proud to have collaborated with our partners to show that smart investments in transportation technology are critical to transform our roadway systems.”
The congress brings together professionals from various sectors—leaders, policymakers, researchers—to discuss how intelligent transportation systems can enhance road safety, reduce congestion, and support economic growth.
Georgia DOT is also hosting a kickoff event for its DODD Designation Program during the congress. This program aims to help other agencies implement Day One V2X capabilities by outlining criteria such as deploying V2X communications infrastructure, maintaining supportive digital applications, and committing to ongoing operations. Private-sector organizations may be recognized as DODD Supporters if they actively contribute to advancing V2X ecosystems.
The DODD initiative aligns with federal efforts under the Federal Highway Administration’s V2X Deployment Plan.
Georgia DOT manages state and federal highways as well as bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, aviation, bike, and pedestrian programs throughout Georgia. With nearly 4,000 employees statewide, the department prioritizes innovation and safety while supporting local governments in road maintenance.
