The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) plans to restrict construction-related lane closures on interstates and major state routes approaching Augusta. This restriction will apply from Wednesday, April 2 through Monday, April 14. These measures are intended to alleviate congestion as traffic is expected to increase due to golf events in the Augusta area.

Lane closures will be halted on I-20, encompassing the entire length of District 2 from Covington to Augusta, as well as on I-520. Additional lane closure restrictions will be applied to all Georgia DOT projects in Columbia and Richmond Counties, and on major state routes leading to Augusta, specifically in Burke, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, and McDuffie Counties.

In addition, Georgia DOT will deploy HERO units and extra CHAMP units in the Augusta area. These units, which are complimentary services provided by the Georgia DOT, are tasked with managing traffic-related incidents on interstates. Their main role is to clear roads to restore the flow of traffic, as well as assisting stranded drivers, changing tires, and identifying various maintenance issues.

To request a HERO or CHAMP unit, drivers can dial 511.

Important reminders for travelers include:

– Construction crews may still be operating near highways despite the suspension of lane closures, and some long-term lane closures could remain in place for safety purposes.
– Lane closures related to emergencies or incidents may still occur as necessary at any time.
– Travelers are advised to stay alert, adhere to road signs, and use added caution, especially near work zones.

For real-time updates on travel conditions on Georgia’s interstates and state routes, travelers can call 511 or visit www.511ga.org. This free service offers current information on traffic, incidents, lane closures, and weather delays 24/7.
