The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) announced it is monitoring weather conditions that could bring wintry precipitation to District 2, which covers east-central Georgia, on Sunday.

According to the department, crews are scheduled to begin driving routes south of Interstate 20 at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday. The teams will monitor road conditions and apply salt if they find any hazardous areas.

Current forecasts indicate that temperatures during the event may not be low enough for precipitation to freeze on roads. However, the forecast also predicts temperatures will fall below freezing Sunday night, which could result in black ice forming on some surfaces. Crews plan to continue monitoring and riding their routes late Sunday afternoon and will apply salt where needed if drying is slow.

The department cautioned drivers to be careful around Georgia DOT trucks and allow extra space as crews may need to slow down while applying salt.

“All district maintenance personnel are on call and prepared to salt, plow, or brine roads as needed,” according to the statement from Georgia DOT.

The agency emphasized that its plans depend on current weather reports and could change as new information becomes available. It said it would continue monitoring the situation throughout the event.
