The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) will begin a quick response project on State Route 44 near Lake Oconee starting Monday, August 25. The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety by installing right-hand passing lanes at two locations: southbound at Clack Circle and northbound near Lake Oconee Family Fitness.
Currently, this section of SR 44 is a two-lane road without turn lanes, which leads to congestion when drivers attempt left turns. Georgia DOT has noted that some drivers use the shoulder to pass on the right in these areas.
To address this issue, additional pavement and striping will be added so vehicles can safely pass on the right. R&B Developer, Inc. has been given notice to proceed with construction, which is expected to last up to three weeks depending on weather conditions. The scheduled completion date for the project is November 2025.
Motorists are advised to expect delays during construction and are urged to drive cautiously through the work zone. They should reduce speed, stay alert, and watch for workers in the area. For updates on traffic conditions or work status, travelers can call 511, visit https://511ga.org/, or use the Georgia 511 app.
