The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of temporary lane closures on the I-285/I-20 East Interchange as part of an ongoing reconstruction project. The work is scheduled to take place from Friday, January 9, 2026, through Friday, January 16, 2026, and will affect both daytime and overnight traffic.
According to the Georgia DOT, construction partners will close various interstate lanes to facilitate the reconstruction of system-to-system ramps at the interchange. The project also includes adding collector-distributor (CD) lanes and auxiliary lanes along I-20 east of the interchange and I-285 north of the interchange.
Daytime closures are planned each day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on I-20 Eastbound between Wesley Chapel Road and Panola Road, as well as between Columbia Drive and Wesley Chapel Road. Additional single-lane closures will occur on connecting CD lanes from the I-285 Interchange to Wesley Chapel Road during these hours.
Flagging operations are also scheduled for Hillandale Drive at DeKalb Medical Parkway and Miller Road over I-20 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Overnight closures will take place between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., affecting multiple segments including I-20 Eastbound from Wesley Chapel Road to Panola Road, CD lanes from the I-285 Interchange to Wesley Chapel Road, and sections between Columbia Drive and Wesley Chapel Road. There will also be lane closures impacting access from I-20 Eastbound to I-285 Northbound and on the Wesley Chapel off-ramp.
I-285 Southbound will see single or double lane closures between the interchange and Columbia Drive as well as Glenwood Road during overnight hours from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Similar nighttime restrictions are planned for northbound lanes between Columbia Drive and Glenwood.
Westbound traffic on I-20 will experience alternating left or right lane closures nightly from Panola Road to Columbia Drive, with additional impacts near Fairington Road Overpass.
The Georgia DOT advises motorists traveling through these areas during affected times to expect delays due to reduced capacity in active work zones.
