The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will hold a Public Information Open House to present proposed safety improvements for US 80 on Tybee Island in Chatham County. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 8, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Tybee Island YMCA Gymnasium at 204 5th Street.
This event follows input gathered during a similar open house in March 2024 and additional coordination with the City of Tybee. GDOT is now seeking further public feedback on updated proposals aimed at reducing crashes along US 80/SR 26 between Lazaretto Creek and Tybrisa Street.
Attendees can view project displays and discuss details with GDOT staff throughout the event; there will be no formal presentation so participants may arrive at any time during the two-hour window.
Public comments regarding the project will be accepted until Friday, December 19, 2025. Comments can be submitted online by visiting the GDOT project page under Public Outreach and Community Engagement, selecting Current Public Meeting, then US 80/SR 26: Safety Improvements, and following instructions to comment. Alternatively, written comments can be mailed to Ms. Amber Phillips at the Office of Environmental Services, Georgia Department of Transportation, One Georgia Center, Atlanta.
Project plans and displays will remain available for review on the website throughout the comment period after the open house. Physical copies can also be reviewed at the Georgia DOT Savannah Area Office located at 630 West Boundary Street in Savannah.
According to GDOT, “Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways.
