The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the suspension of lane closures on state interstates and routes during the July 4th holiday travel period. This suspension will start at noon on Thursday, July 3, and end at 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 6. The decision aims to ease congestion, reduce delays, and enhance safety for motorists.
Georgia DOT advises drivers to remain cautious as some work zones may still be active for safety or emergency reasons. “When in a work zone, slow down and move over one lane when possible,” the department said. Weather conditions could also affect travel; rain increases crash risk by 60%, while extreme heat can lead to more road debris.
In metro Atlanta, heavy traffic is expected near popular destinations like Centennial Olympic Park and Six Flags Over Georgia. Historical data indicates typical congestion on metro Atlanta interstates from July 1-2 between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., with potential heavy traffic on July 3 and July 6 from noon to 8 p.m.
For surface streets, heavy to normal traffic is anticipated starting late morning on July 1 through July 3. Express Lanes will follow adjusted schedules based on recent trends but are subject to change.
Major interstates outside metro Atlanta are predicted to experience varying levels of congestion. I-75 southbound into Stockbridge and northbound near Chattanooga may see moderate congestion, while I-16 near Savannah could face heavy congestion.
Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead using the state’s travel information service, 511GA, especially in areas hosting holiday events such as Lawrenceville’s Prelude to the Fourth or Savannah’s River Street Celebration.
Safety tips include being mindful of pedestrians during fireworks displays and moving over for first responders as required by Georgia law. Drivers should also designate a sober driver if consuming alcohol at celebrations.
Georgia DOT offers free services like HERO in metro Atlanta and CHAMP outside it for roadside assistance. Motorists can dial 511 for help or use the free app for navigation and real-time updates.
Georgia DOT continues its mission of maintaining highways with a focus on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility across the state.
