The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) announced on May 1 that construction and maintenance projects will continue throughout the metropolitan Atlanta area over the weekend.

To help drivers avoid major delays, GDOT has created a webpage dedicated to weekend lane closures in Metro Atlanta. The public can view all scheduled weekend lane closures at http://www.dot.ga.gov/ds/metrolaneclosures. Users can access information by selecting options within a search filter, which sorts by traffic impact level, county, interstate, or state route. The schedule is posted weekly and is available from 4:00 p.m. Thursday until 10 a.m. Monday.

For real-time travel conditions on Georgia’s interstates and state routes, GDOT advises calling 511 before traveling. Georgia 511 is a free phone service providing statewide traffic and travel information, including incidents, lane closures, and delays. Callers can also request assistance or report incidents at any time of day. In metro Atlanta, HERO roadside assistance can be requested by calling 511 as well. More details are available at www.511ga.org.

GDOT plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways while also participating in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. The department states it helps local governments maintain their roads and aims to deliver a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability, and mobility.

The Georgia Department of Transportation delivers transportation solutions that support economic development across the state; employs about 4,000 staff members with an operating budget over $4.5 billion; focuses on developing roadways while supporting rail and transit programs; operates under the State Transportation Board; serves the entire state through its network; and works with local governments and federal agencies to advance transportation efforts, according to the official website.
