Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) crews and contractors have made significant progress in preparing east-central Georgia roads for an expected winter storm on Saturday. As of 10 a.m., approximately 80% of the planned routes had been treated with brine solution. All state routes north of Interstate 20, as well as I-20 and I-520, were completed overnight. Efforts will continue throughout Saturday to treat state routes south of I-20.
GDOT is closely monitoring weather forecasts and road conditions. Crews are ready to shift to salt and plow operations if necessary.
Travel is strongly discouraged overnight due to the risk of ice accumulation creating hazardous driving conditions. “For safety reasons, Georgia DOT crews will not clear debris from the roadway until daylight arrives on Sunday.”
To address potential issues such as stranded motorists or crashes, HERO and CHAMP operators are conducting around-the-clock patrols, focusing primarily on I-20 and areas northward.
All district maintenance staff are working 12-hour shifts, ensuring continuous coverage until the threat passes. “Please note, our plans are based on current weather reports and are subject to change.”
