Governor Brian P. Kemp has signed Senate Bill 1, known as the “Riley Gaines Act of 2025,” into law. The legislation mandates that all public schools and participating private schools, as well as public colleges in Georgia, categorize sports teams by biological sex as male, female, or coed. The law also bars biological males from participating in female sports teams and restricts access to restrooms, changing areas, and overnight accommodations based on biological sex.

“This is a proud and decisive moment for Georgia,” stated Senator Greg Dolezal, who sponsored the bill. “This legislation restores fairness and preserves the integrity of women’s athletics. These principles should never be sacrificed at the altar of radical, woke ideology. I’m proud to have chaired the Senate’s Special Committee on the Protection of Women’s Sports and to stand with the many athletes, parents, and advocates, like Riley Gaines, who refused to stay silent.”

Lt. Governor Burt Jones highlighted the commitment to protecting women’s sports, referencing his role as a father of a female athlete. He said, “As the father of a female athlete, nothing is more important than ensuring that the protection of women’s sports is a reality in Georgia. I want to thank Governor Brian Kemp for signing Senate Bill 1 into law and Sen. Greg Dolezal for sponsoring this priority.”

Riley Gaines, host of the podcast “Gaines for Girls” and a key figure in the legislation, shared her perspective, stating, “Three years after I, and dozens of other D1 female athletes, were forced to compete against a man in a Georgia pool, the Riley Gaines Act of 2025 is now law. It’s an honor of a lifetime to know our stories help shed light on a grave problem of rampant gender ideology.”

Senator Greg Dolezal, who represents the 27th Senate District covering part of Forsyth County, continues to serve as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Transportation. For media inquiries, contact can be made through SenatePressInquiries@senate.ga.gov.
