Senator Larry Walker III of Georgia announced the conclusion of the National Council of Insurance Legislators’ (NCOIL) Fall Meeting, which took place in Atlanta. Senator Walker chaired the Property & Casualty Committee during the event and led discussions on consumer protection measures.
“This was a banner week for Georgia,” said Sen. Walker. “Not only did we have the privilege of hosting NCOIL’s most highly attended meeting ever, but we also advanced policy solutions that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of insurance consumers across the country. These reforms build on the work we’ve already done in Georgia to strengthen transparency, protect homeowners and make sure bad actors cannot take advantage of families after storms or during claims. I’m proud that the work we’ve done here in Georgia is becoming a national model for success.”
At the meeting, Senator Walker oversaw approval of a resolution recommending that states extend non-renewal notice requirements from 30 days to 60 days. This policy change was previously enacted in Georgia through legislation authored by Walker. The resolution encourages other states to adopt similar rules, giving homeowners more time to respond to non-renewal notices and secure alternative coverage.
The committee also re-adopted an amended model bill aimed at preventing contractor fraud. The bill, originally focused on roofing contractors, was expanded through amendments by Senator Walker to cover all contractors. This mirrors legislation passed last year in Georgia targeting so-called “storm chasers.” The updated model provides broader protections for property owners against fraudulent practices following disasters.
Senator Walker is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Insurance and Labor and represents Georgia’s 20th Senate District.
