State Representative Mike Cameron (R-Rossville) announced the unanimous passage of House Bills 350 and 57 in the Georgia House of Representatives. Both bills, sponsored by Cameron, address child protection and family law updates.
House Bill 350 seeks to update Georgia’s Safe Place for Newborns Act. If enacted, it would allow fire stations, medical facilities, police stations, and ambulance services to install newborn safety devices. These are secure, continuously monitored receptacles that enable mothers in crisis to safely and anonymously surrender their newborns. The aim is to ensure immediate care for infants and support their placement into foster care or adoption.
House Bill 57 proposes an amendment to state incest laws by including step-grandparents and step-grandchildren among those prohibited from engaging in sexual intercourse or sodomy with each other.
Rep. Cameron commented on the legislation: “I was proud to sponsor both pieces of legislation, and I am incredibly grateful for my House colleagues’ support of these two measures. House Bills 350 and 57 are crucial steps toward protecting Georgia’s children and families. By allowing newborn safety devices, we would give mothers in crisis a safe, anonymous option, while ensuring infants receive immediate care and a path to adoption or foster care. At the same time, HB 57 would further support families and children by including step-grandparents and children into state law regarding the crime of incest. I am hopeful for the Senate’s favorable consideration and for these bills to become law for the benefit of our great state.”
Both bills have now been sent to the Senate for further review.
Jon G. Burns has represented Georgia’s 159th House District as a Republican since his election in 2005 after succeeding Ray Holland.
