There is growing concern over the deregulation of gun silencers in the United States, as part of a legislative move buried within the “Big Beautiful Budget Bill.” This development has sparked debate about public safety and gun violence. The bill proposes to remove suppressors from the National Firearms Act, eliminating the $200 tax and background check process, making it easier for individuals to obtain silencers.

Critics argue that this deregulation poses a significant threat to public safety. A longtime state representative from Georgia expressed her dismay at this legislative change, stating: “The logic of deregulating silencers is as twisted as it is terrifying. Silencers serve one purpose—to mask the sound of gunfire.”

Additionally, there is rising concern over Glock switches, illegal devices that convert handguns into fully automatic weapons. These devices have been described as turning small arms into battlefield weapons. The same Georgia representative noted that many bills aimed at banning these switches and strengthening protections in schools have been consistently blocked or ignored in the legislature.

“This isn’t about politics. This is about life and death,” she emphasized, expressing her determination to continue advocating for stronger gun legislation despite setbacks.

The issue remains contentious as lawmakers balance individual freedoms with public safety concerns. The representative concluded with a pledge: “To every family who has lost a loved one to gun violence: I see you. I stand with you. I fight for you.”
