Senator Donzella James and Representative Carl Gilliard will hold a press conference titled “Saving Lives Day” to discuss new public safety legislation in Georgia. The event is scheduled for Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. on the South Steps of the Georgia State Capitol in Atlanta. The public is invited to attend.
During the press conference, Sen. James and Rep. Gilliard will address several bills aimed at enhancing safety measures across the state. Senate Bill 419, known as “Eric’s ID Law,” proposes that individuals with physical or mental disabilities not immediately apparent be allowed to request a symbol on their driver’s license to indicate their condition.
House Bill 465, referred to as the “Autism Missing Person Alert System Act,” would establish an alert system for missing persons with autism, modeled after “Mattie’s Call.” This bill has already passed in the Georgia House during the 2025 legislative session and now awaits review by the Georgia State Senate.
Another piece of legislation to be discussed is House Bill 1011, called “The Daren Lewis Saving Lives Act.” This bill aims to lower fatalities and injuries resulting from high-speed police pursuits in residential areas by introducing preventive strategies and additional training for law enforcement officers.
Media representatives planning to attend are asked to confirm their participation in advance via SenatePressInquiries@senate.ga.gov.
