The Georgia General Assembly was not in formal session this week, but legislative work continued as the House Appropriations Committee began reviewing the governor’s proposed state budget. This phase is seen as a key part of the legislative process because it shapes how taxpayer money will be allocated and which priorities will receive funding.
Committee members examined the budget proposal and raised initial questions about funding for education, public safety, healthcare, and other essential services. These hearings are intended to give lawmakers a better understanding of the proposal before any changes are made.
Decisions on the state budget have direct effects on local school systems, emergency services, community programs, infrastructure projects, and economic development within House District 149. Although Rep. Floyd Griffin is not a member of the Appropriations Committee, he stated that he is monitoring developments closely and staying in contact with committee members to make sure that Baldwin County, Jones County, and East Macon are represented during discussions.
“Good budgeting requires asking tough questions early. These initial discussions help identify priorities, ensure fiscal responsibility and protect taxpayer dollars. I remain committed to advocating for responsible spending and fair treatment for our district as the budget moves forward,” Griffin said.
The General Assembly is scheduled to reconvene on Monday, January 26, 2026; however, no legislative business will take place that day due to a State of Emergency declared by the Governor ahead of expected winter weather. Budget talks are set to continue throughout the week as legislation begins moving through committees toward consideration by the full House.
Griffin also advised residents to stay safe during winter weather conditions and keep up with official updates from state agencies such as those provided by the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency’s website.
Burns has served in the Georgia State House since 2005 after being elected to represent District 159 following Ray Holland’s tenure (https://www.house.ga.gov/Representatives/en-US/member.aspx?Member=772&Session=27).
