Last week, members of the Georgia Senate and House Education Committees met to review progress on efforts aimed at strengthening the state’s teacher workforce and literacy initiatives. The joint meeting was led by Sen. Billy Hickman, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Youth.
The committees received updates from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) regarding recommendations to support K-12 educators and leaders in Georgia. Discussions included expanding access to teaching apprenticeship programs, improving teacher compensation, developing a unified marketing plan for the profession, and ensuring that educators have access to employee assistance programs focused on wellness.
Directors from Georgia’s Regional Education Service Agencies Network (RESA) also shared information about their literacy coaching model. They explained how these coaches can help expand educational capacity at the local level and provide high-quality instruction throughout the state.
Sen. Hickman commented on the developments: “Friday’s meeting was an overwhelming success; it is clear that these initiatives are becoming transformative parts of how we strengthen education and help our children learn to read. Georgia’s PSC shared its expansive ‘Vision 2045’ strategic plan, which prioritizes creating seamless pathways into the education profession and supporting sustainable leadership development for our educators. Likewise, Georgia’s RESA network presented its robust literacy coaching framework and how coaches can collaborate across districts to address the unique needs of their teachers. I am proud of the meaningful progress we are making to improve literacy for Georgia’s students and to increase the overall quality of our state’s educator workforce.”
Senate Resolution 237, sponsored by Sen. Hickman during the 2025 Legislative Session, urges continued action from stakeholders such as PSC in providing recommendations for sustaining a strong pipeline of teachers and school leaders in Georgia.
