Georgia voters are turning out in record numbers for the state’s 2026 primary election, according to a May 4 announcement from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. More than 214,000 Georgians cast ballots during the first seven days of early voting, a 28% increase compared to over 167,000 during the same period in 2022. As of late morning on May 4, more than 230,000 people had voted early.

The high turnout is seen as significant for Georgia’s elections process. Officials say it demonstrates voter confidence and engagement with the state’s voting system.

“This record-breaking turnout is a testament to a strong election system, overseen by the best in the business – county election directors who are dedicated to serving their communities,” said Secretary Raffensperger. “Georgians know it’s easy to vote and cast a ballot securely in the Peach State.”

Raffensperger also addressed criticism of Georgia’s elections process: “Georgians are heading to the polls in force, further disproving the critics. For years, naysayers have launched unfounded attacks, but Georgians know the facts: it’s easy to vote and hard to cheat here in Georgia.”

State officials encourage residents seeking updated information on turnout numbers to visit Georgia’s Election Data Hub.

Georgia has implemented several measures intended to make voting accessible and secure. The state was first nationally with automatic voter registration, at least seventeen days of early voting described as “the gold standard,” and no-excuse absentee voting. In recent years Georgia has seen increased voter participation including record single-day midterm turnout in 2022 using its paper ballot system. National organizations have recognized Georgia for its efforts; most recently it ranked second for Election Integrity by the Heritage Foundation and received top marks for Voter Accessibility from the Center for Election Innovation & Research.
