In mid-July, Georgia is set to host the 2025 Major League Baseball (MLB) All-Star Game at Truist Park. This event will bring numerous sports enthusiasts and MLB fans to the state, offering them a chance to experience Georgia’s hospitality and facilities.
Over the past two decades, cities like Atlanta, Savannah, Macon, Augusta, Valdosta, and Columbus have seen population growth, reflecting Georgia’s appeal as a place to live and work. However, in 2021, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred relocated the All-Star Game from Georgia due to concerns over election integrity legislation known as SB 202.
Manfred explained his decision by stating that SB 202 imposed “…restrictions to the ballot box.” Yet data suggests otherwise; SB 202 reportedly created a secure voting environment with increased voter registration and participation rates in subsequent elections compared to previous years.
The 2024 election saw nearly 68 percent of eligible Georgians casting their votes—a record turnout surpassing the national average of 65 percent. This increase occurred after SB 202 was implemented.
Despite past tensions over voting rights perceptions between MLB and Georgia officials, MLB has awarded the upcoming game back to Atlanta. Manfred previously stated that moving the game was meant “to demonstrate our values as a sport” while emphasizing support for fair voting access across America.
As Georgia prepares for this significant sporting event once more, there are calls for MLB leaders during their press conference at ASG week not only acknowledge prior misunderstandings about SB-20
