Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr has criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom, stating that he “surrendered L.A. to violent anarchists,” while President Donald Trump took measures to enforce the law. Carr emphasized that “peaceful protesters use words” and “rioters use violence,” adding that “criminals must be held accountable.”

“Governor Newsom surrendered L.A. to violent anarchists,” said General Chris Carr. “President Trump stepped up to enforce the law. This isn’t difficult – peaceful protesters use words, rioters use violence, and criminals must be held accountable.”

According to a press release, Carr joined 19 other Attorneys General in filing a brief supporting Trump’s deployment of the National Guard during riots in Los Angeles. The brief argues that Trump acted within his legal authority to protect federal agents and property when California officials failed to control rioters who disrupted immigration enforcement and caused widespread chaos.

The brief details incidents of violence against federal immigration officers, damage to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) buildings, and requests for assistance from Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers amid escalating disorder. It opposes California’s emergency lawsuit blocking federal intervention, describing it as a political move detrimental to public safety and constitutional principles. The coalition asserts that when states fail to maintain order, the federal government must intervene to uphold national security.

Carr said, “In California, we’re seeing the results of leadership that excuses lawlessness and undermines law enforcement. When local and state officials won’t act, the federal government must.” He further expressed support for law enforcement and President Trump’s actions, saying they will not allow chaos to prevail in their states.

Chris Carr was appointed as Georgia’s attorney general by then-Governor Nathan Deal in 2016 and was re-elected in November 2022. Since assuming office, he has prioritized issues such as human trafficking, gang activity, and opioid misuse. This includes establishing Georgia’s first Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit and Gang Prosecution Unit. Previously, Carr served as the Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development under Governor Deal from November 2013 to November 2016.
