CJ Pearson, co-chair of the GOP Youth Advisory Council, said that Republican efforts to cut Medicare Advantage undermine seniors’ trust and benefit Democrats politically. This statement was made on X.
“During the campaign, Donald Trump promised to protect Medicare and stand up for seniors,” said Pearson. “Why are Senate Republicans eager to break that promise by targeting Medicare Advantage? This is a betrayal of millions counting on it. And political gift to the Democrats.”
According to Politico, recent GOP Senate efforts to curb Medicare Advantage overpayments have ignited internal conflict. Some Republicans view the cuts as undermining a key program. The proposals, aimed at reducing payments to insurers, faced backlash from conservative lawmakers and industry advocates who warned of potential harm to seniors. This intra-party debate illustrates the tension between cost-cutting goals and preserving a popular program.
The Kaiser Family Foundation reports that Medicare Advantage enrollment rose by 2.1 million from 2023 to 2024, reaching 20.5 million beneficiaries. About 20% of these enrollees are in Special Needs Plans, marking a 16% increase from the prior year. This continued growth signals an increasing reliance on Medicare Advantage for senior healthcare coverage.
Mark Farrah Associates reported that Medicare Advantage covered 34.6 million Americans as of March 2025, or 51.5% of Medicare-eligible individuals. This represents a 3.8% increase from the prior year, down from a 6.5% growth rate the year before. Over the past five years, total enrollment has increased by about 6.4 million, showing steady expansion.
