The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced that the Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) program will resume 24/7 patrols and full coverage of nearly 400 miles of interstate highways in metro Atlanta starting July 1, 2025. This change restores overnight patrols every day of the week.

HEROs play a crucial role in clearing roadways after traffic incidents to restore normal traffic flow. They also provide free roadside assistance, such as helping with flat tires, dead batteries, and supplying fuel and coolant when needed. “HEROs are our first and best resource to keep traffic moving safely and efficiently in metro Atlanta,” said Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry, P.E. He emphasized that reinstating full service reflects the department’s commitment to providing consistent assistance on roadways.

The HERO program has been active since 1994 but faced staffing challenges in 2023, leading to reduced patrol hours from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. daily. During this period, Georgia DOT focused on recruiting and training new operators while reducing HERO’s service area. The Coordinated Highway Assistance & Maintenance Program (CHAMP) provided additional support outside metro Atlanta.

From July 2023 to April 2025, HERO and CHAMP units assisted approximately 135,141 motorists across all coverage areas. “Traffic incidents do not operate on a schedule,” said Tyrone McCord III, HERO Unit Manager at Georgia DOT. With staffing now restored through recruitment and training efforts, he affirmed their commitment to patrolling metro Atlanta roads around the clock for improved safety and reduced delays.

Motorists can request assistance from HERO or CHAMP by contacting 511GA via phone or app. The system also provides updates on travel speeds, traffic incidents, construction events, lane closures, and severe weather data.

Georgia DOT is responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining state and federal highways in Georgia. It also supports local governments with road maintenance and is involved in various transportation programs.
