Georgia House Majority Caucus Whip James Burchett has announced the members of his Whip Team for the 2026 legislative session. The announcement includes the appointment of State Representative Carter Barrett from Cumming as a new deputy whip.
Burchett stated, “One of the best parts of serving as House Majority Whip is the chance to serve with devoted deputy whips from around the state who bring differing perspectives to our conversations about important legislation. I look forward to continuing to serve with Chief Deputy Leverett and our returning deputies, and welcome Representative Barrett to the whip team this year.”
State Representative Rob Leverett will continue in his role as chief deputy whip. Leverett commented, “I’m pleased to be returning as chief deputy whip and look forward to serving with Whip Burchett, Representative Barrett and the entire whip team as we continue to serve our caucus and our state.”
Barrett expressed appreciation for his selection, saying, “I’m honored to have the chance to represent my Forsyth County constituents as a member of the whip team, bringing their perspectives to leadership.”
The full list of returning deputy whips includes Bethany Ballard (Warner Robins), Chas Cannon (Moultrie), Johnny Chastain (Blue Ridge), Rob Clifton (Evans), Brent Cox (Dawsonville), Sandy Donatucci (Buford), Derrick McCollum (Chestnut Mountain), Matt Reeves (Duluth) and Bill Yearta (Sylvester).
The responsibilities of the Whip Team involve monitoring legislation throughout committee and floor proceedings in the Georgia General Assembly. They also help ensure that House members are informed about bills and resolutions under consideration.
Burns, a Republican who was elected in 2005, represents Georgia’s 159th House District after succeeding Ray Holland.
