Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns has emphasized the importance of reading as a foundational element for children’s success. He reaffirmed the state House’s commitment to supporting parents and teachers in fostering student achievement.
“Dayle and I were humbled by the support we received at the first annual Night for Literacy at the Capitol,” said Jon Guerry Burns, State Representative from Georgia. “Reading is the foundation of our children’s success. The House is committed to championing the parents and teachers who work every day to ensure Georgia’s students are prepared to succeed in the classroom and beyond.”
The inaugural Night for Literacy at the Capitol showcased Georgia’s initiatives to enhance early reading skills and foster collaboration among educators, parents, and policymakers. The event underscored reading as a key component of lifelong academic success.
According to Georgia’s Department of Education, literacy rates among third graders have seen slight improvements since 2023. The state has invested over $140 million in literacy initiatives, teacher training, and classroom resources through the Georgia Literacy Act.
Research from the Annie E. Casey Foundation indicates that students who achieve reading proficiency by third grade are four times more likely to graduate high school on time, highlighting the significance of early literacy programs.
Burns serves as the 75th Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives and represents District 159. Throughout his career as a public servant, he has prioritized education, economic development, and community engagement.
