Jon Burns, the Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives, has said that antisemitic violence must be condemned and called for continued support for Israel amid growing global threats. Burns made this statement on the social media platform X.
“Despicable acts of evil and antisemitism have no place in our nation,” said Jon G. Burns, State Representative from Georgia. “Our Israeli brothers and sisters are facing heightened discrimination across the globe. It’s critical that we continue to offer our unwavering strength and support to our strongest ally in the Middle East. Our prayers remain with the families and loved ones of the victims as they mourn this unimaginable loss.”
On May 21, 2025, two staff members from the Israeli Embassy were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., following a diplomatic event. The Washington Post reported that the suspect, Elias Rodriguez, shouted pro-Palestinian slogans during the attack and was arrested at the scene. Authorities have charged him with two counts of first-degree murder and classified the act as terrorism. This incident has raised concerns over diplomatic security and increasing antisemitic violence in the United States.
According to The Times of Israel, antisemitic incidents worldwide rose by 340% from 2022 to 2024, reaching unprecedented levels. This surge is attributed to rising geopolitical tensions and the amplification of online hate speech. Organizations such as the World Zionist Organization and Jewish Agency for Israel warn that this trend poses a growing global threat to Jewish communities.
A Gallup poll conducted in 2025 found that only 46% of Americans express sympathy toward Israelis, marking the lowest level in 25 years of polling on this issue. Gallup reports that this decline in support correlates with rising political polarization and shifting narratives around the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The data also reveals a generational divide, with younger Americans less likely to side with Israel than older demographics.
Burns is serving as the 75th Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives since January 2023. According to the Georgia State Financing and Investment Commission, he has been part of the legislature since 2005, representing District 159 as a Republican. Burns has also held positions such as House Majority Leader and focuses on issues like economic development, healthcare, and education.
