Contractors for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County next week. The construction activities are scheduled from Friday, June 13, 2025, to Friday, June 20, 2025, contingent on weather and site conditions.

Traffic pacing is planned for Wednesday and Thursday nights. Law enforcement vehicles will slow traffic between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. on I-16 eastbound between the interchange and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive and westbound between US 23/Ocmulgee East Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive.

Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp remains closed for several months, with the on-ramp relocated to the far left lane.

The project involves multiple phases:

Phases 4 and 5 include ongoing construction of bridge substructures and superstructures for ramps and new bridges along I-16 westbound/I-75 to Walnut Creek. Demolition of certain bridge ramps continues alongside installation of retaining walls, drainage structures, entrance ramps, and pouring of bridge deck spans.

Phases 2 and 3 focus on lighting installations over Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street as well as constructing sound walls along I-75 northbound/southbound.

Phase 1 evaluates remaining work items from the I-16/I-75 split to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard exit.

This $500 million project aims to widen and reconstruct sections of I-16, I-75, and their interchange through seven design phases until completion in 2030. Improvements include new lanes, ramps, upgraded bridges, drainage systems among other enhancements aimed at boosting safety for commuters across Georgia.

Motorists should anticipate delays during this period while advised to check real-time traffic updates via GDOT’s communication channels before traveling through affected areas.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways,” according to GDOT officials who emphasize commitment towards an innovative transportation system enhancing safety across regions.
