Construction work on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County will continue from September 5 through September 12, 2025, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). The ongoing project is part of a larger effort to improve safety and mobility for commuters, regional travelers, and commercial freight.
From Monday night, September 8, through Friday morning, September 12, one left lane on I-16 westbound near the interchange will be closed each night. On Thursday night, September 11, flaggers will direct drivers at the Coliseum Drive/Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard entrance ramp to I-16 eastbound as crews work in the area.
A long-term traffic shift affecting I-75 southbound and northbound traffic heading to I-16 eastbound remains in place and is expected to last through January 2026. Southbound drivers from just south of Pierce Avenue will be shifted onto new left lanes of I-16 eastbound and must detour past Spring Street to exit at Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard due to restricted access at Exit 1A. Northbound drivers from just north of Hardeman Avenue will also use new left lanes but retain full access to Spring Street/Exit 1A. Roadside signage and lane striping are in place to guide motorists through these changes. These shifts allow for construction of pedestrian bridges over the Ocmulgee River.
Some closures remain in effect for several months: Spring Street’s far right lane at the I-16 westbound on-ramp and the right-hand on-ramp itself are both closed; the Spring Street on-ramp has been relocated to the far left lane.
During this period, construction activities include continued work on bridge substructures and superstructures for ramps at Spring Street and Second Street, pouring bridge deck spans on new structures, building retaining walls along I-75 northbound and southbound, installing drainage systems throughout the project area, lighting installation at Riverside Bridge and Walnut Street over I-75, guardrail installation, sound wall construction along I-75 corridors, and evaluation of remaining work items near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
The $500 million project involves widening and reconstructing sections of I-16, I-75, their interchange, upgrades to bridges and ramps, additional interstate lanes, new collector-distributor lanes (CD lanes), upgraded drainage systems and more. Construction is divided into seven phases with completion scheduled for 2030.
