Webber-United is set to open the new I-16 westbound on-ramp at Spring Street in Macon-Bibb County on January 13, 2026. The traffic shift will begin at 9:00 PM and is expected to be completed by 5:00 AM the next morning.

As part of this change, northbound drivers on Spring Street who want to access westbound I-16 will use a newly constructed roadway and ramp located in the far-right lane. The current left-turn movement from Spring Street onto I-16 westbound will be discontinued.

This development is part of the ongoing I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project, which has a budget of $620 million. The project aims to widen and reconstruct both interstates and their interchange in Macon-Bibb through seven phases scheduled for completion by 2030. Planned improvements include new collector-distributor lanes, additional interstate lanes, upgraded ramps, enhancements to 11 bridges, new walls, and improved drainage systems. These upgrades are intended to improve safety and mobility for local commuters, regional travelers, businesses, and commercial freight moving between Georgia’s southern coast and other destinations across the state and country.

The Georgia Department of Transportation advises that construction dates may change due to weather or other factors. Motorists should expect delays, drive cautiously, and reduce speed while traveling through work zones. For real-time updates on work status and traffic conditions, drivers can call 511 or visit https://511ga.org/.

According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), the agency is responsible for planning, constructing, and maintaining state and federal highways in Georgia. GDOT also works with bridge projects as well as public transit systems such as railways and general aviation programs. The department supports local governments with road maintenance efforts. “Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation,” according to GDOT.
