Contractors working for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) will continue construction on the I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project in Macon-Bibb County. Starting Saturday, August 15 and running through Sunday, August 31, 2025, a continuous detour will be in place for semi-truck traffic.

During this period, the entrance to I-16 eastbound from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard/Coliseum Drive will be closed to semi-trucks. Truck drivers will need to use an alternate route via eastbound Emery Highway and southbound Ocmulgee East Boulevard to access I-16 eastbound.

The I-16/I-75 Interchange Improvement Project is a $500 million initiative aimed at widening and reconstructing both interstates and their interchange in Macon-Bibb County. The project is being completed in seven phases with work expected to continue through 2030. Once finished, it will add new collector-distributor lanes, additional interstate lanes, new ramps, upgrades to eleven bridges, new walls, and improved drainage systems. These changes are intended to improve safety and mobility for local commuters, businesses, regional travelers, and commercial freight moving from Georgia’s southern coast across the state and beyond.

“Georgia Department of Transportation plans, constructs and maintains Georgia’s state and federal highways. We’re involved in bridge, waterway, public transit, rail, general aviation, bike and pedestrian programs. And we help local governments maintain their roads. Georgia DOT and its nearly 4,000 employees are committed to delivering a transportation system focused on innovation, safety, sustainability and mobility. The Department’s vision is to boost Georgia’s competitiveness through leadership in transportation,” according to GDOT.

Motorists are advised that dates may change due to weather or other factors. Drivers should expect delays near the construction zone and are encouraged to exercise caution while traveling through work areas.
