The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of temporary lane closures on interstates and state routes in Fulton and Cobb counties as part of the ongoing I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. The closures are scheduled to begin Monday, August 18, and will continue through Friday, August 22, with some activities starting as early as Friday, August 15.
According to Georgia DOT, contractors will be working to reconstruct and widen several interstate ramps at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange. The project also includes adding collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange. As work progresses, motorists may encounter narrowed or shifted travel lanes and shoulders within the project limits.
Specific closures include single right-lane and right-shoulder closures on I-285 northbound from Cascade Road to Bolton Road nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., pacing operations on I-285 southbound between SR 280/South Cobb Drive and the I-20 Interchange daily from 10:30 a.m. to noon, and similar nighttime closures on both directions of I-20 in various segments. Additional lane restrictions are planned for state routes such as SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive.
Georgia DOT advises that “exact time may change due to weather conditions. There may be intermittent traffic pacing and lane and ramp closures that occur within the work zone in addition to this notice.” The department urges drivers to expect delays, exercise caution, reduce speed in work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.
