Construction on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project in Cobb and Fulton counties is set to begin soon, with increased activity expected along the project corridor. Crews are currently engaged in surveying, geological testing, utility coordination, tree clearing, and grading access points to the worksite.
The construction is scheduled to start in summer 2025, although this timeline may change. The project includes relocating all left-hand exits and entrances to the right side of the roadway, upgrading or replacing existing bridges and ramps, constructing a connecting lane on I-20 westbound from the interchange to Fulton Industrial Boulevard, and making improvements along I-20 from Factory Shoals Road to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. Additionally, several bridges along I-20 will be modified or replaced.
Recent updates to the project’s design concept include relocating a planned braided ramp from I-20 westbound to an at-grade ramp at Fulton Industrial Boulevard, consolidating exit ramps from I-20 eastbound to I-285 northbound/southbound, replacing bridges carrying I-20 over I-285, and relocating the I-20 centerline back to its original location. These changes aim for a more compact interchange both horizontally and vertically.
The updated design is expected to reduce delays by an estimated 20%, increase average vehicle speed through the interchange by approximately 10%, provide smoother merging and diverging with longer auxiliary lanes and connecting lanes, reduce impacts on environmentally sensitive areas, lessen noise impacts on surrounding properties, and accelerate completion of improvements within the project corridor.
For further information or inquiries about the project, individuals can visit the project office at 4200 Shirley Drive in Atlanta during business hours or contact via phone or email. Motorists are advised that there may be intermittent traffic pacing as well as lane and ramp closures within the work zone.
