On February 23, 2026, the Georgia Department of Transportation announced progress on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project, highlighting significant developments in the construction of a new flyover ramp connecting I-20 westbound to I-285 southbound. The ramp will span multiple major roadways and ramps, including both directions of I-20 and existing I-285 ramps.
The project is notable for its scale and complexity. The flyover ramp will stretch approximately 2,700 feet—about half a mile—and consist of 20 individual spans forming one continuous structure. Most of the ramp will be about 44 feet wide, accommodating two travel lanes and wide shoulders for safety.
Construction began with deep foundations and concrete supports known as bents in summer 2025. Nearly half of these supports have been completed. Massive prestressed concrete beams, ranging from 54 to 74 inches tall and up to 165 feet long, are being delivered and installed beginning in late February. According to the Georgia Department of Transportation, “Bridge beams are part of the main event throughout the spring for the I-285/I-20 West Interchange, with the delivery and installation of the first beams beginning in late February! This is an exciting milestone for the project as this and the neighboring flyover ramp from I-285 northbound to I-20 westbound start to take shape.”
The department said that beam deliveries are scheduled during off-peak hours or at night due to their size—some over 100 feet long and weighing tens of tons—and require specialized trucks for transport. Once delivered, large cranes lift each beam into place between live traffic lanes with minimal clearance.
After beam installation, crews will construct the bridge deck by placing steel reinforcing bars across the beams before pouring ready-mix concrete. The department said every aspect is designed for durability and safety: “Every inch of this bridge deck is designed with durability and safety in mind. From the wide shoulders that accommodate disabled and emergency vehicles to the smooth transitions between spans, this flyover is built to serve drivers for generations.”
