The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of planned lane and ramp closures as part of the ongoing I-285/I-20 West Interchange project in Fulton and Cobb counties. The closures, which are scheduled to begin Monday, March 9 and continue through various dates in mid-March, are dependent on weather conditions.

According to Georgia DOT, the construction work will focus on reconstructing and widening several interstate ramps at the I-285/I-20 West Interchange. Additional improvements include adding collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along sections of I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange.

The planned lane closures will affect multiple segments:

On I-285 Northbound between Cascade Road and Bolton Road, single right-lane and right-shoulder closures are scheduled nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., with double right-lane closures taking place from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Southbound on I-285 from US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway to SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, single right-lane closures will occur nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., while alternating double lane closures are set for late-night hours.

A pacing operation affecting all lanes is planned for southbound I-285 between SR 280/South Cobb Drive and the I-20 Interchange daily from March 9 through March 12 during late morning hours.

On I-20 Westbound, several stretches—including Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway—will see left or right-lane overnight closures between March 9 and March 15. Pacing operations are also planned for portions between SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive and the interchange with I-285.

Eastbound on I-20 between Six Flags Parkway and SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard, both single and double right-lane overnight closures are scheduled throughout the week.

Other affected locations include parts of Six Flags Parkway, SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard southbound from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive, and SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive northbound from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive.

There will also be overnight ramp closures requiring detours:

For motorists traveling eastbound on I-20 wishing to access northbound I-285, an overnight closure is scheduled for March 13–14 as well as March 26–28; drivers will need to exit onto southbound I-285 before re-entering northbound via Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Westbound traffic seeking access to northbound I-285 will encounter an overnight closure March 20–22; motorists should use SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard (Exit 49), return east on I‑20, then follow signs onto northbound I‑285 (Exit 51B).

Georgia DOT advises that exact times may change due to weather conditions. Additional intermittent traffic pacing or lane/ramp closures could occur within work zones beyond those listed here.

“Motorists are advised to expect delays, exercise caution, and reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers,” stated Georgia DOT officials in their release. “Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions.
