The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced a series of temporary lane closures as part of ongoing work on the I-285/I-20 West Interchange Project. The project involves reconstruction and widening of several interstate ramps at the interchange, along with the addition of collector-distributor lanes, connecting lanes, and auxiliary lanes along sections of I-20 west and I-285 north.
Starting Monday, March 2 through Saturday, March 7, weather permitting, contractors will implement single and double lane closures during nighttime hours in both directions on I-285 between Cascade Road and Bolton Road. Southbound I-285 from US 78/Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway to SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive will also see similar right-lane and shoulder closures each night.
Additionally, pacing operations affecting all lanes and shoulders are scheduled on southbound I-285 from SR 280/South Cobb Drive to the I-20 interchange daily from March 2 to March 5 between 10:30 a.m. and noon.
On westbound I-20, single and double left-lane closures will occur nightly from Anderson Avenue underpass to Riverside Parkway through Friday, March 6. Pacing operations for all lanes are planned for these same segments during overnight hours. Eastbound I-20 from Riverside Parkway to the interchange with I-285 will have nightly right-lane closures through Saturday morning.
Other affected locations include southbound SR 70/Fulton Industrial Boulevard from Wendell Drive to Shirley Drive with nightly right-lane closures until Saturday morning; and southbound SR 139/MLK Jr. Drive from Old Gordon Road to Adamsville Drive with similar restrictions through Friday night.
A major ramp closure is scheduled overnight from Friday, March 13 into Saturday morning for eastbound motorists on I-20 seeking access to northbound I-285. Drivers will be detoured onto southbound I-285 at Exit 51A before rejoining northbound via Exit 9 at SR 139/Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
Motorists are advised by Georgia DOT: “expect delays, exercise caution, reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, stay alert, and watch for workers.” Real-time traffic updates are available by calling 511 or visiting 511ga.org.
